What happens when you first have acupuncture
When I first see you I will use different diagnostic methods to put together an individual treatment plan that takes into account your current health and lifestyle. I take a complete medical history, and may examine the site of your symptoms if you have pain.
I will also take the pulse on each wrist. This gives feedback on how your body is working and what needs to be focused on. I also look at your tongue; this also give information about different parts of the body. Both contribute to deciding what points need to be used.
The first appointment can last up to 1.5 hours
I aim to create a calm, friendly space where you will feel relaxed and reassured. I discuss what I am going to do at each stage of the treatment.
Acupuncture treatment offers people time and space which can lead to you feeling better in yourself.
I then insert very fine acupuncture needles at points selected to affect your whole body as well as your symptoms. These are left in for up to 20 minutes before the needles are removed.
You may feel deeply relaxed during and after the treatment.
What about the needles
Acupuncture needles are single-use sterile needles and will be disposed of after each treatment. Acupuncture needles are so fine that most people don’t feel them being inserted. It is normal to feel a dull ache or a tingle as the needles are adjusted.
Follow up treatments
Before putting the needles in I will have a short chat at the beginning to discuss how you are feeling and whether you have noticed any changes since the last treatment.
You might notice that it is not just your symptoms that improve but other niggling complaints also get better with a course of acupuncture.
How many treatments
This is something that I will discuss with you at the first consultation as everyone is individual. It is normal to have weekly treatments initially that reduce in frequency as your body responds to treatment. I normally recommend a course of 4-6 treatments as acupuncture has an accumulative effect.
Some chronic conditions will take longer. Acupuncture can be used as a maintenance treatment and you may choose to come for monthly or seasonal treatments.
